Renewal Project
About the Project

To get more involved or contribute, go to foreyouth.org
Since it opened in 1962, the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course has thrived as a center for aspiring golfers and building community.

The Fore Youth: 2023 U.S. Open Community Legacy campaign, led by the SCGA, USGA and The Los Angeles Country Club (LACC), has raised over $8M for the project to create a community legacy benefiting underserved and underrepresented youth.
The Maggie Hathaway course is a County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation facility, and in October 2024, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved an investment of $7.8 million from the 2024-2025 Supplemental Budget for its renovation.
This proposed project will provide new and improved facilities and resources, while honoring the trailblazing legacy of performing artist, community activist, and golf pioneer, Maggie Hathaway.

The Proposed Renewal Project:
-
Renovated Golf Course, Enhanced Driving Range, Practice Facilities, and new Landscaping
-
New Clubhouse with Community Center + Youth Enrichment Lab + Golf Shop
-
Expanded Junior Golf Programming

Announcements
July 2025: We're happy to share some fantastic progress at Maggie Hathaway Golf Course as we continue to revitalize and elevate your playing experience:
-
Holes 1–9 have been completely sodded, giving the course a fresh, lush look after Hanse Golf Design worked their magic.
-
Greens are being carefully mowed slightly above the normal height as part of the grow-in process. This helps ensure strong, healthy turf that will deliver exceptional putting surfaces in the long run.
-
Fairways and tees are now being mowed close to their final height, offering a preview of the smooth, consistent playability we’re aiming for throughout the course.
-
All sandy waste areas have been hydro-seeded, helping to stabilize these spaces and blend them beautifully into the natural landscape. Please note that the seed will take approximately 14–21 days to germinate.
-
Sand topdressing has been completed across the entire course—including greens, tees, and fairways. This important step helps level the new sod, reduce organic buildup, and improve water infiltration for long-term turf health.
-
All new landscape material has been planted and is growing in beautifully, adding visual interest and enhancing the natural charm of the course.
-
A revamped driving range and new practice putting greens are on the way! While we’re still working through the final permitting, we’re optimistic about completing these areas in the coming months.

A view of the 9th hole, with a pot bunker on the left flanked with another bunker on the right - this hole will require an accurate shot. The sand on the lower right of the photo is the sandy waste area left of the 8th green.
The 7th hole has a sand bunker on the right and some turfgrass on the left before it transitions into a sandy waste area. The sandy waste areas have been lightly seeded with grasses that will allow most golf balls to be found.

The 6th hole will be a downhill hole featuring sandy waste areas on both the right and left side. There is a ’spine’ down the center of the green which will add to the difficulty of the hole.

The golf course was sodded entirely. Pictures are bermudagrass sod rolls prior to installation, More than 1.5 acres of sod was laid in one of the days.
June 2025: We're excited to share two significant milestones in the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course Renewal Project. As of this month, all greenside bunkers have been fully shaped and constructed with best-in-class practices to ensure long-term performance and playability. We have also moved into the beginning of the grow-in phase with large areas being sodded starting May 21st. Key accomplishments include:
-
Internal Drainage Installed: High-performance drainage systems have been installed in each bunker to ensure quick water removal and reduce maintenance.
-
Gravel Backfill and Bunker Liner: A gravel layer and a premium bunker liner have been added to prevent sand contamination and extend the life of the bunkers.
-
Fescue Grasses Planted: Native-style fescue grasses have been planted around bunker faces, adding texture, beauty, and a natural transition into the course landscape.
-
Sand Placement Finalized: With high-quality bunker sand now installed, these features are ready for finishing touches and grow-in.

Hole 7 bunker has been completed. Every greenside bunker has been precisely shaped to match the design intent and improve shot variety and visual appeal.

Sod will continue to be installed three days a week as we work our way across the course. Each new section brings us closer to a fully revitalized playing experience.

We are excited to share this shot from 8 green looking to 7 green. The course is taking shape and will delight golfers once complete.

TifTuf bermudagrass now covers most of hole 4 and all of holes 5 and 6, providing a durable and water-efficient turf for the course.

The greens on holes 4, 5, and 6 and the nursery green have been sodded with Pure Distinction bentgrass, which is known for its smooth surface and excellent playability.
May 2025: We are happy to share that the six bunkers have all been shaped and fitted with a completed drainage system. A bunker liner has been installed, consisting of two inches of gravel topped with a sprayed polymer. This modern liner helps keep the bunker sand clean, allows it to play drier, and prevents washouts during heavy rain.
The first shipment of sod is expected to arrive and be installed during the week of May 19. Meanwhile, sand is being worked into the top four inches of soil to improve its structure, enhance water infiltration, and create a healthier growing environment for turf.

April 2025: The virtual community meeting was a success—thank you to everyone who participated and shared their support. Drainage and greensmix work has been completed on all holes, marking a major milestone in our renovation efforts.

Irrigation mainlines have all been completed.

75% of the sprinklers have been installed. Thank you to Turf Star and Toro for their generous donations to the project.

Greensmix work completed on one of the new greens.
